It’s August, which means your local Target is already itching to put out its Christmas decor. However, August also means that fall is nearby. I’ve been putting thought into how I can turn my existing closet into what will be trending this fall, and what I can thrift for filler pieces. I always recommend looking at what you own before running out and buying what’s popular that month. Maybe even consider starting a capsule wardrobe slowly, that way each season you can add in a few pieces here and there without buying a new wardrobe every few months.
Or, rent your clothes like I do. Here’s a $20 off code to try Nuuly and see why I’m obsessed with it. (Not sponsored, I just am so pro-renting with how sustainable it is).
Mary Janes and Ballet Flats
Flats are EVERYWHERE. Slingbacks, square toe, and mary janes are all over my feeds, and I’m sure you’ve seen them too. They remind me of a more feminine version of the popular loafer that’s held its trend for the past several seasons. I think when worn right, a ballet flat can elevate an outfit into 2023 (soon to be 2024). But it does walk the thin line of 2010 business casual, so beware. Stick to modern shapes and styles, plus styling it with a loose pant or flowy dress to steer clear of an outdated outfit.
Quilted Coats
The quilted coats had a chokehold over us last spring, and this fall will be no different. These can vary from soft, cotton fabrics to more weather-resistant, sportier materials. Bonus points if the jacket is boxy. The fun part about this trend is it can truly be unique to a person, depending on the pattern or colors you like. Plus, if you’re in the market for a cotton, patterned quilted jacket then there are so many small businesses that hand-make them! Support small!
Bright Block Colors
I think another big trend we will be seeing this fall is the playfulness of fun, bright block colors. This can be a pop of color in a scarf, or a few loud pieces to brighten up a look. Color is fun, and gone are the days of boring neutrals (for now, I still love my linen neutrals for summer). Color is happy, it’s vibrant and it’s a statement. Have FUN with it!
Denim on Denim
I will wear denim on denim to my grave. I’ve been seeing some people play with structure denim fits, and bonus points if you tie in the bright colors that I just talked about. Denim is a great base and acts as a neutral while offering some texture. If you don’t own a great, vintage denim jacket then now is the time to start hunting!
White Maxi Skirts
It’s giving NYC meets country. I’ve been loving the tiered maxi-skirt look, and I can totally see this trend of white skirts following through into fall. Throw on some sneakers or ballet flats (or cowgirl boots TBH) with a graphic tee, slap on a tote bag and you’re good to go. Once it’s chilly, toss an oversized sweater over to pull it all together. So effortless, so versatile.
In The Trenches
The trench coat saw a resurgence this past spring, which means it will be everywhere come fall. Trenches don’t go out of style, but they were momentarily replaced by the dad coat. Trench coats win in the battle of long jackets, however. They can be worn on cool fall days, and even into the winter. But more importantly, they’re weather resistant. Bonus: Throw on a trench coat over your WFH lounge set and suddenly you’re as chic as it gets while grabbing groceries.
Bruise Control
Navy and black is back. The combo with polarizing opinions is quite possibly my new obsession, and I think it will be everywhere this fall. Think navy slacks with black leather ballet flats. Or blue leather bags with black suede accents. The pairing compliments one another when done right.
The Baggier The Better
Copenhagen called and they actually don’t want their style back because everyone should take notes. Effortless, baggy jeans with a layered sweater gives that clean girl aesthetic in its own, unique way. Aside from Euro-inspo, pairing the right baggy clothes with each other can be really difficult. When nailed, it makes folks who pass by ask “How’d she do that?”. Think chunky sweaters and loose, full-length jeans when building your fall wardrobe.
Chunky Charms
Now this trend I adore. Big, chunky jewelry charms will be everywhere this fall and I’m not just talking around our necks. I’m talking bag charms and sneaker charms, too. Level up your handbag with a scarf and layer on a beaded charm (bonus points if you DIY it yourself and make it personalized).
I’m Seeing Red
I think the color of the season will be bright red. We’ve been seeing red creep its way more and more into retail stores, on our shoes, and with our accessories. Green has been the new neutral lately, and probably won’t go far as red takes the spotlight for a period of time.
Inspo From The 70’s
Channeling the 70’s is always a fall go-to, but this season especially. Big, chunky sunglasses and layered jewelry SCREAM shag carpet and bell bottoms. Lacey, billowy tops, and pattern pants are the 1970’s subtle sister, too. Keep the shades of browns and greens in mind this fall.
