Portland, Maine can be described as a nautical, New England port city with artist flare and BOMB food. I got a vibe that if you took Providence, Rhode Island and Newport, Rhode Island and created a love child, the result would be Portland. I fell in love with this charming corner of the States, but more importantly, I cherished a quiet weekend away with some of my girlfriends.
We stayed at this AirBNB in Casco Bay. My friends and I fell in love with it so much, that we almost don’t want to tell people about it so that it stays our little secret. Although… everyone needs to know about this ocean-side nook.
The house overlooked Casco Bay, an inlet from the Atlantic Ocean. It was charming and comfortable fit four of us, although it absolutely could’ve fit more. The owners built a gorgeous all-glass sunroom on the back of this house that looks over the bay. The sun warms you right up as you enjoy a cup of tea and watch the sunrise. Yes, it sounds tacky. But yes, it was incredible.
The girls and I decided to have a very lowkey weekend. We made minimal plans, with intentions to explore and “at least get to one brewery” (which we did). Our first night that we arrived — after driving an extra hour and a half in pouring rain and traffic — we explored an improv comedy show downtown. We had little knowledge on the group but figured it would be an adventure. And who doesn’t love live comedy?
We arrived at The Fresnel Theater & ComedySportz Maine and were surprised to see a tiny, underground room with about 20 chairs set up. We were actually pretty excited to see the show be a bit more intimate and smaller because it made for a more interactive experience. I laughed for 70 minutes straight and drank $1 orange sodas. It was the perfect Friday night.
Saturday was our “explore and get to at least one brewery” day. We started with lunch at Duckfat, an aggressively suggested spot to eat by literally every single person I asked. And there’s a reason: It was so delicious. The girls and I split roasted brussel sprouts with bacon and apples as well as beautifully pressed paninis.
The remainder of our Saturday was spent shopping until we wondered to the Allagash Brewery. We had a low key afternoon at the brewery, sampling some of their delicious ales and ending our night an Italian restaurant in downtown Portland.
Sunday morning the girls and I woke up at 6 am with ease because it was actually daylight savings. We watched the sun rise slowly over the coast while we wrapped ourselves in blankets and ate potato donuts from The Holy Donut. I’m grateful for a peaceful weekend away with my babes in the lovely Portland, Maine and I hope to be back soon!
