“I hate Valentine’s Day.”
We get it: The funny jokes, the single-forever memes, and the overwhelming feeling of loneliness around Valentine’s Day. It’s been a group activity to shame this holiday revolving around love for decades. We seriously need to stop being anti-Valentine’s Day and start loving the ones around us in celebration of February 14th.
I wasn’t always pro-Saint Valentine. In fact, I was the jerk who made black heart jokes and rolled my eyes at the love birds who’d pass me on the street. I’ve been both single and in relationships during V-day, and seemingly the single ones are just as happy, warm, and fuzzy as the taken ones.
I learned that the holiday isn’t just about the love for a significant other. It’s about all of the love that surrounds you in life. From you family, your friends, your pets etc. It’s a time to grab drinks with your galentine’s or make dinner plans with your grandparents. It’s not an excuse just to buy flowers and be extra nice to your bae once a year, it’s a reminder to cherish the people in your life and eat chocolate out of heart-shaped boxes.
Hint hint: Galentine’s Day is February 13th
Being single on Valentine’s Day is awesome. And I’m not just saying that to make myself and other singles feel better. We can take times for ourselves, our family, and our adorably fluffy house pets that love us unconditionally no matter what. There’s no disappointing dates and missed expectations with a bae. You can buy yourself flowers, or even better you can buy your best babes flowers!
The world that we live in today is too darkened by hate. Don’t add to the negativity by boycotting a day of romance, but rather embrace it and spread the love.
Don’t worry about the honeymoon-phase couple a few tables over holding hands while they eat their spaghetti. Instead, feel happy for them that they have something good going on. Because wouldn’t you want someone to think that about you? We all deserve love, so let’s not get annoyed at the “lucky ones” and start looking at yourself as a true lucky one.
